Marko van Deventer Biography
Marko van Deventer, the founder of Vlakvark Customs, was born and raised in Pretoria. He grew up with a fiercely independent spirit and often found himself having to figure out challenges on his own. This sparked his interest in problem-solving and he soon developed a passion for fixing and modifying things, beginning with his BMX bike and expanding to household items. Marko’s interest in technical drawings and his ability to visualize objects in 3D led him to study Urban and Regional Planning.
Despite his field of study, Marko’s love of fixing and racing bicycles eventually led him to work in the cycling industry. It was there that he developed a keen interest in adrenaline-pumping outdoor expeditions such as mountain biking, rock climbing, motocross, 4×4, and skydiving. Seeking a new challenge, Marko traveled to Iraq to work on vehicles for the US Navy. He excelled in this position, gained experience overhauling engines, and quickly rose to a senior position because of his unique ability to improvise when parts were scarce.
On his return to South Africa, Marko returned to the cycling industry as a workshop manager, but he always sought opportunities to expand his skill set. He began welding and designing brackets for bikes, and he even designed a structure to build a chrome washing plant. After taking a course in engineering, Marko received an opportunity to open a cycling shop where he could also weld and modify vehicles. Here he began creating his own off-road equipment, including bumpers and lifting brackets.
Marko’s desire to build his own off-road bumper led to widespread compliments and requests from others for him to build bumpers for their vehicles. Marko eventually decided to take the leap and start building off-road accessories as a business – and so, the dream of “Vlakvark Customs” became a reality.

Welcome to Vlakvark Customs, a company that specializes in designing and manufacturing top-quality off-road vehicle products. Our story began when our founder, who has a passion for building accessories for his bakkie, met Christo through a friend. Christo was in search of a bumper specific for his Nissan Patrol, but none of the 4X4 shops had it in stock. Unfortunately, at that time, our founder was too busy with his job to take on the project.
However, when the founder decided to pursue his passion, he reached out to Christo and offered to build his bumper. After successfully completing the project, they both realized the potential of their combined talents and decided to start a business together.
At Vlakvark Customs, we take pride in our products and strive to create something unique, strong, protective, and affordable. We do not import products and simply fit them onto vehicles; instead, we design and manufacture everything ourselves to ensure the highest level of quality.
